The project analyses a production system with individual or combinations of poultry, pig or arable farms, where biogas plants digest animal manure and crop residues to enhance utilization of nutrients and minimize greenhouse gas emissions. A number of methods will be tested to process the digested biomass for producing improved fertilizers for targeted use in arable crop production systems to enhance nutrient utilization and crop yield. This processing will take place at the biogas plant using mechanical and biological methods that comply with organic principles. The greenhouse gas emissions will be measured during processing and management of manures and after field application. A targeted demonstration activity will engage stakeholders from the organic sector in making these improved strategies practice relevant for speedy implementation. The project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from organic farming by 97,200 ton CO2-eq. The project is expected to generate extra crop yield worth 138 mill. DKK and form the basis for marketing of climate optimized organic fertilizers with a value of 96 mill. DKK annually, and the establishment of four new biogas plants, creating 20 new jobs at each. www.orgprints.org
